Maternal Line

Maternal Line

In honor of Mother’s Day, I am sharing what I’ve discovered thus far about my maternal ancestors, starting with my grandmother.  I owe my existence to all of them.  Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. Eleanor Rose Kelley b. 1921 in Bombay, NY Daughter of Henry Michael Kelley Jr. (American, with Irish ancestors) and Maude Glasgow Maude … Continue reading

Descendants of Henry Kelley Sr.

Descendants of Henry Kelley Sr.

I’ve spent the afternoon updating our Ancestry.com family tree with the information on the page pictured above.  This was dictated to my aunt Elaine by my grandmother Eleanor some time ago. Some interesting tidbits learned from Ancestry’s Census records etc once it was entered: John Shields was a shoe merchant.  In 1925, his daughter Florence … Continue reading

Hermann Mueller / Herman Miller

Hermann Mueller emigrated from Stettin, Prussia to Cazenovia, NY in1908 with his wife Emilie (alternately spelled Amelia, or Emily in censuses), son Otto, and mother-in-law Sophia Bloedow.   They were sponsored by Emilie’s sister and her husband, Bertha and Charles Baaske. Sitting around the kitchen table on a rainy evening in the Adirondack Mountains, Aunt … Continue reading

James Adams, Irish immigrant

James Adams, Irish immigrant

I paid a visit to the Genealogy and Local History department at the Onondaga County Public Library the other day.  In the era of the Internet, I was delighted to find many references that I had not yet found on ancestry.com or Google Books.  One of these was a multi-volume set listing the Irish immigrants who arrived … Continue reading

James Adams of Cornwall, Ontario

In my last post I mentioned James Adams, the father of Isabella Elsie Adams. He is a shadowy father-figure who died when his children were quite young. Who was he? James was an Irish immigrant, who by 1853 was in Canada, likely Cornwall, Ontario based on his daughter Catherine Adams’ birth as recorded in the … Continue reading

Millers & the 1940 Census, take 3

Otto, Anna and Arthur lived at 344 Hillview Ave in 1940- they were definitely counted in the census- Enumeration District 66-175, page 20. I also tracked down Eleanor at 554 Cortland Ave in April 1940 where she and Charlotte Smith shared an apartment. The landlady was Beulah Spohn. Enum 66-169, p. 16. I am positive their next move was to 1343. Both Mom and Char worked at McKesson-Robbins in Syracuse- Mom was a stenographer and Char was a filing clerk.

Third time’s the charm!

Many thanks to my mother, who cross-referenced house pictures and discovered the mystery location(s) of my grandparents and great-grandparents in 1940.

To start with, thanks to everyone who has started to follow my blog, and family members who have provided feedback!  My intention is to write as the inspiration hits, but to also try to be fairly regular in the posting.  This will be more challenging over the summer with nice weather, but we will see … Continue reading

The First Post

I’m starting this blog as a way of sharing the interesting things I’m finding out about my family with the rest of my family, whether I know them or not. Welcome, long-lost cousins! Speaking of which, for you Neilsons out there who may trace your roots back through William Gwynn Neilson, here’s a photo for you… … Continue reading

Millers and the 1940 Census

Millers and the 1940 Census

In the 1930s, my grandfather lived with his parents, Otto and Anna Miller at 231 Borden Ave. in Syracuse.   (His cousin, Agnes Lund, lived with them then too… this is my Zipple cousins’ grandmother).  Knowing this information helped me use ancestry.com’s tools to navigate to the correct district for 1940, where my great-grandparents should … Continue reading
